Pearl Liang: Dinner definitely gets my vote. | London Eater

We already know that Pearl Liang’s dim sum menu is more than formidable, however for a Chinese restaurant to have an equally capable dinner menu, that is a definite rarity in London.
My first visit to Pearl Liang was a little over a year ago, going on a recommendation from Helen, the retired but still ever so amazing World Foodie Guide and whom I still look up to as the Queen of London food bloggers.
Since that time, I have visited other reputable dim sum restaurants though it hasnt kept me away from Pearl Liang – it is my most frequented dim sum restaurant in 2009.
I don’t know why there is a disconnect in quality, perhaps some sort of Chinese wall exists between the dim sum and the dinner guys even though they share the same kitchen.
And based on this visit, I would be comfortable to take my family to this restaurant, confident that it can even impress my dad – one of the pickiest eaters I’ve ever dined with …You should have seen him let rip at Gaucho… Overall, I enjoyed dinner at Pearl Liang, benchmark cooking and I highly recommend it if you are in the mood for affordable and delicious Chinese food.

This is Pearl Liang, an upmarket Chinese, and it speaks volumes about the owners' confidence that they would choose Paddington Basin, of all places, to locate a destination restaurant.
Its main claim to fame is the excellent range of dim sum available at lunchtimes, and that is the chief area of competition, with Pearl Liang matching Royal China dumpling for dumpling.
We decide to supplement our set menus with a further order of barbecued pork puffs and something called Pearl Liang four combinations – which turns out to be a selection of cheung fun noodle pancakes (one filled with prawn, one with beef, one with monkfish and one with barbecue pork).

£65 for lunch for three, including drinks Huge, stylish and again hitting the fabulous standards which made it such a big hit when it opened two years ago; the dim sum is better than anything in Chinatown Rocking dim sum is the top proposition at this Chinese on the Hove/Brighton borders, but its extensive menu attracts praise for offering fresh dishes at other times too This long-established city-centre behemoth is always full of Chinese people and offers a wide and varied menu, of which dim sum is a highlight

Pearl Liang is in the large Paddington Central development, a set of connected modern flats near the railway station.
The room has an attractive bar on the right as you enter, the large dining room being mostly to the left.
I was wondering if we might be the only diners given the journey, but the place had a decent sprinkling of customers, many of whom were Chinese.
A prawns and chive dumpling had tender prawn filling, though the texture of the dumpling was a little heavy (12/20).
The bass was extremely well cooked, the flesh of just the right consistency, while the sauce did not overwhelm the fish (14/20).

food
Pearl Liang remains very popular – the place was already heaving when we arrived.
Steamed dumplings take pride of place, including prawn laced with a smear of wasabi.
The inventive streak continued with heavenly morsels filled with prawn, courgette and celery, while prawn and barbecued pork versions of cheung fun provided a medley of umami flavours.
